Take your canyoning skills to the next level with professional training in one of the world’s most spectacular canyoning destinations.

Delivered by Canyoning New Zealand in partnership with internationally experienced canyoning instructor Pepijn Hoeksema, our 2026/2027 training programme has been designed for canyoner’s who want to build confidence, improve technical ability and make better decisions in challenging environments.

With exclusive access to more than 15 diverse canyoning locations throughout the Queenstown, Wānaka and Haast regions, you’ll train in a wide variety of real-world environments — from introductory canyon techniques through to advanced whitewater movement, complex rope systems and expedition-style canyoning.  Every course combines practical instruction with hands-on experience, creating an engaging learning environment where skills are developed through doing.

Pepijn has guided and instructed canyoning across Europe and New Zealand for many years and has been part of the Canyoning New Zealand team for the past four seasons.  His extensive international experience, technical expertise and coaching style ensure every participant receives professional, supportive and personalised instruction.

Whether you’re taking your first steps into canyoning, preparing for professional guiding, or looking to refine advanced techniques, our courses provide a structured pathway to help you become a safer, more confident canyoner.

Option 1. Canyoning Fundamentals

Build a strong foundation in canyoning.  Learn essential rope techniques, movement skills, equipment use, safety systems and decision-making in a structured and supportive environment.

Option 2. Advanced Canyoning

Develop advanced technical skills, whitewater movement, complex rope systems and risk management while building the confidence to tackle more demanding canyon environments.

Option 3. Canyoning Coaching

Tailored one-on-one or small-group coaching designed around your individual goals. Perfect for experienced canyoner’s, guides and clubs looking to refine specific techniques or prepare for assessments and expeditions.


Canyoning Fundamentals

Master the Essential Skills to Explore Canyons Safely and Confidently

Duration: 7 Days

Whether you’re completely new to canyoning or looking to build a solid technical foundation, the Canyoning Fundamentals Course provides everything you need to begin your journey with confidence.

Over seven immersive days, you’ll develop the practical skills, technical knowledge and decision-making ability required to safely navigate basic canyon environments.  Training takes place across a variety of stunning canyon locations throughout Queenstown, Glenorchy, Wanaka and the Haast Pass, giving you experience in a diverse range of terrain, water conditions and canyon features.

Working alongside highly experienced instructors, you’ll progress from learning the core techniques on dry land to applying your new skills in real canyon environments.  Through small group instruction and hands-on learning, you’ll gain the confidence to move efficiently, work effectively as part of a team and make sound decisions in dynamic outdoor environments.

No previous canyoning experience is required — just a willingness to learn and a passion for adventure.

Advanced Canyoning

The Advanced Canyoning Course is designed for experienced canyoners who are ready to progress beyond recreational descents and develop the technical skills required for more challenging canyon environments.

Throughout seven intensive days, you’ll explore a selection of demanding canyons while refining advanced rope systems, whitewater techniques and decision-making under the guidance of highly experienced instructors.  Training is delivered in real canyon environments, allowing you to apply new techniques where they matter most.

This course is ideal for canyoner’s who have experience in a variety of canyons and are comfortable descending canyons graded around V3 A3 III.  If you’re looking to increase your technical ability, confidence and efficiency while preparing for more complex canyon objectives, this course is the next step in your progression.

Training takes place in a variety of canyon environments throughout Queenstown, Glenorchy, Wanaka and the Haast Pass, providing the ideal setting to develop both technical ability and confidence in real-world conditions.
